Welcome to Tribal Music Asia, a site that showcases the archival work of Victoria Vorreiter.
Following the success of her first documentary film, The Music of Morocco and the Cycles of Life, Victoria has turned her gaze to documenting the tribal music and ceremonies of the peoples of the Golden Triangle in the heart of Asia.
This crossroads, where Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Burma converge, is populated by indigenous hilltribe people, who have used music and ceremonies to pass on their history, traditions and knowledge from generation to generation.
The importance of hilltribe music cannot be over-emphasized – it plays a vital role in every aspect of their lives. This is beautifully illustrated by the Akha saying: "If a village has no music, how can it be called a village?”
This site details the Songs of Memory project as it unfolds. Included you will find information about the Songs of Memory Book, CD, Photographs, Educational Film Series, Multi-media Museum Exhibition and Photos Exhibits. You can watch a short clip of the upcoming documentary film, The Music of the Golden Triangle and the Cycles of Life, as well as hear recordings of traditional tribal music.
This website is also the source where the Songs of Memory materials – Book, CD, Note Cards, and Golden Triangle poster – can be ordered. Your purchases actively support the continuation of this work. Please visit our store.
The News and Events section is regularly updated, so you can follow the progress of the project as it develops.
It is of great urgency to document the traditional hilltribe music before it vanishes altogether. By supporting this project you can help to keep these extraordinary traditions alive.
With my thanks for your interest in traditional culture, Victoria
